Biography
London-based quartet Evans the Death filter their pop sensibilities through an art-damaged post-punk lens. Comprising singer/keyboardist Katherine Whitaker, guitarist/singer Dan Moss, guitarist Olly Moss, bassist Lan McCardle (preceded by Matt Gill), and drummer Rob Mitson, the band formed in London, naming itself after the undertaker in Dylan Thomas' radio drama/stage play Under Milk Wood. Evans the Death made their recorded debut in May 2011 with the Threads 7" for Fortuna Pop, showcasing Whitaker's commanding vocals and the band's driving swagger, which earned them airtime on BBC radio as well as Xposure Big One status on the XFM radio network. Sophomore single Telling Lies arrived March 2012 on Slumberland. The band's self-titled debut LP, recorded the previous summer with Rory Atwell (Veronica Falls, Male Bonding, the Vaccines), was released on Slumberland in May 2012. The band spent the next few years dealing with busted relationships, unemployment, and poverty, all the while working with Atwell again on a second album. The darker, more musically diverse Expect Delays was released in early 2015. By the time they began recording their next album, McCardle and Mitson had been replaced by Daniel Raphael and James Burkitt, respectively. Working with Atwell again, the band adopted a policy of recording quickly and live together in the same room using only 8-tracks. The resulting sound was far less indie pop and much more influenced by the noisy energy and attitude of U.K. post-punk. Their third album, Vanilla, was released by Fortuna Pop! in June of 2016. ~ Chrysta Cherrie, Rovi
