Biography
Recordings and regular television appearances, including The Tonight Show, brought Carol global acclaim. In addition to her performances at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Lincoln Center, she toured extensively internationally. Her final project, Carol Sloane Live At Birdland, released in 2022 on the Club44 Records label and gained critical acclaim from prominent jazz outlets. Andrew Gilbert of JazzTimes wrote, “…she retains her cool warmth, agile phrasing, and nonpareil sense of time. Buoyed by superlative support from pianist Mike Renzi and bassist Jay Leonhart, and Scott Hamilton’s convivial tenor sax chatter, Sloane wrings every last drop of emotion from each song.” John McDonough of DownBeat shared, “Live At Birdland blends upscale jazz-club intimacy with a mix of American songbook standards and distinctly neglected non-standards that have been Carol Sloane’s cup of tea since the start.” Richard J. Salvucci of AllAboutJazz said, “Sloane's repertoire here is a terrific live recording, accompanied by the late Mike Renzi (a longtime accompanist on piano), Jay Leonhart on bass and Scott Hamilton on tenor sax. Not only is her singing poised and heartfelt, as one would expect, Sloane is also a wry raconteur who knows how to work an audience. Her asides and other casual remarks in the intervals between performances are an added treat and help recreate the atmosphere of a club date. It all works very well.”
