Biography
"One of the great cult figures of 20th century music."-AllMusic Having adopted his moniker before Snoop Dogg was born, Swamp Dogg is "the original D-O double G." After writing and recording as Jerry Williams in the 50s & 60s at Muscle Shoals Soul (label to Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett) and other recording outfits, in 1970, he had an LSD experience that gave birth to his "Swamp Dogg" alter-ego. In the 80's, he helped develop the World Class Wreckin' Cru, which produced Dr. Dre amongst other well-known alumni. His new LP Love, Loss & Autotune dropped at Joyful Noise Recordings. "I became Swamp Dogg in 1970 to have an alter-ego--someone to occupy my body while a search party was out looking for Jerry Williams. I was tired of bein’ a jukebox, singin’ all the hits by Ben E. King and Chuck Jackson, bein’ 2nd banana. I couldn’t dance like Joe Tex, wasn’t pretty like Tommy Hunt, couldn’t compare to a voice like Jackie Wilson, didn’t have the sex-appeal of Daffy Duck. But a DOG can do anything. He sleeps on the sofa, shits on the rug, pisses on the drapes, chews up your slippers, humps your mother-in-law's leg, jumps on your clothes and licks your face but he's never gotten out of character. You curse him but you understand. Your love doesn't diminish. Commencing in 1970, I sung about sex, niggers, love, rednecks, war, peace, dead flies, home wreckers, Sly Stone, my daughters, politics, revolution & blood transfusions (just to name a few) and never got out of character." -J. Williams
