Biography
Hi. I’m John Duff. In lieu of a traditional bio, where one might write about themself in the third person, I’d prefer we drop the thinning veil and just acknowledge that I am, indeed, the writer of this biography. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland a couple of decades ago. Did the whole public school thing - my parents made me - nightmare. Got bullied a ton. Blah blah. You know. Really original plot line. At age eight, I competed in my first talent show - singing Frank Sinatra. Mom said, “if you appeal to the oldest person in the room, you appeal to everyone. That’s probably how I became such a purist, musically. These days I think they’d call it “theatrical”, and I’m not sure why that’s bad. Freddie Mercury wasn’t exactly a melancholic indie sad boy. I got a BFA in musical theatre from Syracuse University. I worked as an actor in New York City for the first five years of my post-grad life. That seemed like it would be my whole life, until an off-Broadway musical left me in a dressing room with Perez Hilton, and he told me to move to LA and pursue music. So, I did. My first effort was a song called “Girly”. I wrote the song and directed its accompanying video. It garnered millions of streams across the board. It wasn’t ever a grand statement of “this is who I am.” It was a statement of, “this is what culture is.” While I am a purist, musically; visually I am an absurdist. I am John Duff. Singer, songwriter, director, visionary, and now: auto-biographer.
