Biography
Shanaz Dorsett is a Londoner by way of Montserrat and Northern Cyprus and best known as one third of the band Benin City, recently signed with Moshi Moshi. Dorsett’s upcoming solo project, Cake, tells intimate stories of Dorsett’s coming of age as a woman, delving into body image, domesticity and female sexuality. With influences from Erykah Badu, Frank Ocean and TuneYards, her sound sits between lo-fi electronic and nostalgic R’n’B, with vocals that reveal a conviction to story-telling and a determined revealing of inner truth. Dorsett suspends us in an uncertain space where power, fragility and femininity intertwine. Dorsett says her music is borne of “my heritage, people on the train, Black Feminists, zines and immigrant aunties gossiping.” In many ways, her sound captures, naturally and authentically, the music of a multicultural London. Having enjoyed support from Okayplayer and Afropunk, Dorsett opened for Kelis at a sold out Jazz Cafe show and her last EP, ‘Mother Tongue’ has been streamed over a million times. 2018 is set to be another great year with a tour with Benin City, a second performance at SXSW and the release of Cake.
