Biography
With her feet in Brazil and her body stretching throughout the world, Dani Gurgel makes that mixture the motto of “Out”, her most recent release. Out of so many boxes and labels, Dani navigates with her rhythmic and syllabic Brasilities through jazz, rock, pop, electronica; either in English, Portuguese or lyricless compositions. “Out” reflects on the lack of pause and excess digital mediation of contemporary life, connecting her music with her PhD research. The first single, “Inside”, questions living in bubbles through screens, in a composition by Dani & Frederico Heliodoro. With music production and drums by Big Rabello, “Out” was arranged collectively with Felipe Roseno (percussion, electronica), Agenor de Lorenzi (keys) and Frederico Heliodoro (bass), at Da Pá Virada studios. “Inside” is also available on Dolby Atmos immersive audio through compatible streaming services. Dani Gurgel is a voice instrumentalist, fusing her singing with her experience as a big band saxophonist and rock bassist. She scats in percussive, syncopated and Brazilian syllables, which are theme to her masterclass and her book on the “Rodopio” collection. Since 2013, Gurgel annually tours Japan and Europe, with her own band and her “DDG4”, “São Paulo Panic” and “New Composers” projects, adding to 11 titles in her discography. During isolation in 2020-2021, she produced a variety of concerts that were live streamed and can be watched on her YouTube channel.
