Biography
5 for Trio was formed in Quebec City in 2012 by Sylvain St-Onge (guitar), Mathieu Rancourt (upright bass) and Jean-François Gingras (drums) with a desire to create a new flavor in jazz. Since then, they have constantly been working to build a bridge between modern jazz and progressive music. Influenced by the likes of Tigran Hamasyan, Julian Lage and Avishai Cohen, but also Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Opeth and Radiohead, the band hit the public’s consciousness with a bang with their two albums Witness & Reactions (2014) and Garder la tension (2015). 5 for Trio also stood out with features in the Montreal, Quebec City, Rimouski, Edmundston and Lévis Jazz festivals, the Festival d’été de Québec and hundreds of shows in Quebec, Ontario, New-Brunswick, Nunavut and France. They released in 2019 a third album which is a collaboration with hip-hop master Webster. 5 for Trio is back in 2023 with a new member: Jérémie Hagen-Veilleux on piano and keys. This addition provides the band with a breath of fresh air and added creativity, along with a thousand new possibilities. It is as a trio of 4 (!) musicians that the band is scheduled to release many new singles in 2023. The first one, "Aquafortiste", is out since March 3rd.
