Biography
Since the late 1970s Toyah Willcox has taken to the stage like no other. Charismatic, outspoken and an inextinguishable flame. Her career began when she moved from Birmingham to London to appear in a play at the National Theatre. Shortly after she met the musician Joel Bogen. They formed the band ‘Toyah’, and together with Pete Bush they wrote the albums Sheep Farming In Barnet (Deluxe Edition) and The Blue Meaning (Deluxe Edition) , both hitting no.1 on the Independent Album Charts. In 1981 the ‘Toyah’ band line-up changed but with founders Toyah Willcox and Joel Bogen at the core they crafted a further three studio albums and numerous EPs for the Safari label. They achieved mainstream success with the iconic hit singles I Want to Be Free , Thunder in the Mountains ,It's a Mystery, Brave New World & Good Morning Universe . The ‘Toyah’ album Anthem reached no,2 in May 1981 and spent 46 weeks on the UK album chart, receiving a Gold certification. The follow-up The Changeling was produced by the legendary Steve Lillywhite and spawned an acclaimed summer tour captured on Warrior Rock - Toyah on Tour (Live). Love Is the Law was the final album as ‘Toyah’ band. Subsequent albums would be solo endeavours including Minx , Ophelia's Shadow and In the Court of the Crimson Queen (Deluxe Edition). She formed The Humans with Bill Rieflin to create We Are the Humans (Deluxe Edition), Sugar Rush & Strange Tales. Her latest studio album Posh Pop reached no.22 UK album chart, Aug 2021.
