Biography
Astronauts is the solo project from London-based songwriter Dan Carney. Debut single Skydive arrived in June 2014 – a cascading, subtly menacing mish-mash of creaking acoustics, bleeps, electronic beats, and breathy vocal harmonies which tell a tale of escape, and flying unchecked through the air. The song enjoyed viral success, spending a week in the Hype Machine top five with 4,000 favourites, and racking up over 120,000 plays on Soundcloud during this time. Radio support was worldwide, with airplay from the likes of 6Music and Radio 2 in the UK, KCRW (US), and Double J (Australia). The Hollow Ponds album followed soon afterwards, and combined soft melancholy, psych/folky dynamics and bubbling electronic textures with more abrasive moments of good old-fashioned guitar abuse. The response was as warm, heartfelt, and expansive as the music, with Carney spending much of 2015 and 2016 traveling across Europe to play shows, visiting Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg in the process. End Codes, the second Astronauts album, was released in June 2016, and further showcased Carney’s kosmische-folk sound, distinctive vocal style, and penchant for gently undulating, richly layered arrangements.
