Biography

Upstairs Open released their debut track, ‘You Got Love,’ in 2017 to a magnetic press pick-up. Record of The Day, Clash Magazine and Line of Best Fit all wrote about the track, dubbing it ‘eerily infectious’ and ‘subtly addictive.’ It’s now approaching a million streams. Fast forward to 2023, Upstairs Open are getting back to their acoustic roots, and are set to release their first EP in 5 years: ‘MOTH’. The upbeat title track of ‘MOTH’ — short for, ‘Man of the Hour’ (written with Matt Allchin [Florence & The Machine, George Ezra, Vök]) — is accompanied by a dreamy acoustic home demo, ‘Blue Damage.’ The pair initially met years back through a mutual friend, musical director Sam Kennedy (Foxes, Bastille) during a studio session. Courtney then went off to Edinburgh for university and Daniel began forging his own sound, finding success as a solo artist under his own name, inking a deal with Capitol Records and touring with Hozier. They are now based in London. Upstairs Open’s signature sound was born from a mutual love of musical contrasts, a sound which Indie Shuffle describes as 'ethereal… with the melding of organic and electronic instruments contrasting the duo's gorgeous harmonies.’ The pair is set to release their new EP ‘MOTH’ on Friday the 28th of July.
