Biography
Carving his own space somewhere between alternative hip hop, experimental electronica and soulful songwriting, Awir Leon is a unique voice, questioning boxes as if to make us question ours. Not only a musician but also a dancer, he toured for a decade with several international dance companies, such as Emanuel Gat Dance, before feeling the need to focus mostly on his music. On his third effort, “Love You, Drink Water”, Awir opens a more direct and personal window to his music. It’s a story of inner monsters, of seeking, of failing, of hope. Even though musically complex and intricate, it feels raw, unedited and unapologetic, like a gust of life. It deals with what it means to be a person today, in the most vulnerable way. Often likened to renowned seekers like James Blake, Frank Ocean or Thom Yorke, Awir spent the last two years touring internationally as opening act of another great mind, french artist Woodkid. He wrote this new album during the tour, taking the chance to perfect new songs by performing them to an audience that was just discovering him. The title might either seem too easy, or too obscure at first sight, and in fact it is both, it is human. “My 3 year old niece once said goodbye to me with these exact words – love you, drink water. It came out of nowhere, and felt like the most caring thing to say ever, gave me so much clarity. It was exactly what I wanted to say to myself in these songs."
