Biography
Open about inspirations such as Madlib and J Dilla, and the limited means with which he honed his craft, K, Le Maestro has nonetheless set himself apart from other beatmakers of his generation with a broad spectrum of output that ranges from deep-digging, Donuts-style sample flips to modern synth funk. The producer's discography has expanded rapidly since 2016 to include the divergent full-lengths Lab Sounds (2019) and Whip Music (2021), among an assortment of short-form releases and remixes. Originally from Kinshasha and based in London, K, Le Maestro started and stuck with making music on Mixcraft, a digital audio workstation rarely cited by producers working in the same idiom. He was only 12 years old when some of his earliest material was acknowledged on Twitter by Flying Lotus, another one of his influences. Having made a name for himself with remixes and edits uploaded to SoundCloud, K issued his heady first beat tapes, Hue. and Beat-nam: Sounds of Vietnam, while still a teen in 2016. Although stray tracks continued to surface, it wasn't until 2019 that he issued longer works, namely Syn (a collaborative EP with singer/rapper Riian Raquel) and Lab Sounds (a full-length of instrumentals for House Shoes' Street Corner Music). K explored a smoother, funkier mode two years later with Whip Music, which alternated from instrumentals to full-blown songs with a small cast of vocalists. The album was issued on Berlin's Jakarta label. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
