Biography
Zambia-born, Botswana-raised, Sampa’s upbringing continues to bear an influence on her music. Her debut album - “The Return” -ranges from classic hip-hop to ancient Southern African sounds. Built on four years of personal and musical soul-searching, it’s the product of meaningful musical connections and of Sampa redefining her self-identity away from the comforts of family and old friends. Album contributors include: Jonwayne, MsM (Skepta/BBK), Andrei Eremin, Silentjay, Kwes Darko (Slowthai), Clever Austin (Hiatus Kiayote), Blue Lab Beats, Syreniscreamy, Ecca Vandal and London jazz collective Steam Down. The Return, debut single “Final Form” and the live show have seen Sampa awarded many accolades, including Bandcamp’s Best Album 2019, the prestigious Australian Music Prize in 2019 (first and only artist to win twice), an ARIA for Best Hip Hop Release, two Triple J Awards for Video of The Year and Double J Artist of The Year, as well as Hip Hop Act of The Year at both the Music Victoria and National Live Music Awards. “The Return” has been championed by Annie Mac (Radio 1), Gilles Peterson & Lauren Laverne (6 Music), KCRW & KEXP; Pitchfork, The Guardian, Vulture, OkayAfrica, The Independent, Hypebeast, Crack Magazine and many more. Sampa recently wrapped a sold out Australian and European tour, performing at some of the worlds most iconic festivals, including Glastonbury, Splendour in the Grass, Laneway, Sugar Mountain, and more with more to come in 2020 including Coachella.
