Biography

The origins of Family Hahas go back over a decade. From a young age, best friends Alex Rogers and Joey Briggs were shaped by the colorful soundscapes of their families’ record players: a sweeping collection of aural touchstones such as Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin. At age 9, they found camaraderie in their shared passion for music and soon discovered a number of uncanny similarities in their upbringings. Both had musical mothers—Rogers’s wrote and performed children’s music at the local library; Briggs’s was a singer-songwriter who independently released her own music. Inevitably, the boys formed a dynamic bond, prefiguring the creative rapport that would one day inspire their upbeat yet wistful songwriting. 15 years later, the duo’s pallet of inspiration sonically transcends their families’ record collections. But ultimately, Family Hahas—from the sweet and dreamy “Hindsight” to the manic and frustrated “Too Young”—is an ode to the dimensions of Rogers’s and Briggs’s friendship. “Music has become inseparable from our relationship,” says Rogers. “It’s rare for us to hang out and not talk for hours about song ideas and future projects. It’s our banter.” Whether it’s the band name itself, coined by Briggs—hearkening back to the laughter and whimsy of all the time spent at each other’s houses—or the nostalgia that their music evokes, Family Hahas invites the peruser into the history of a friendship and collaboration whose most exciting work is yet to come.
