Biography
BROKEN HEARTS ARE BLUE - Dark Whimsy and Soft Surrealism LP Broken Hearts Are Blue return with their first record since 1997's THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE. Comprising former members of Vine, Current, and Ordination of Aaron, the group was a touchstone of mid-90s midwestern emo and that earlier LP has achieved cult status. The band re-formed in 2018 and began recording new material that drew from some of the same influences (the Smiths, Seam, Neil Young, the Beatles) while greatly expanding their range and sonic palette. DARK WHIMSY AND SOFT SURREALISM's sixteen songs roam through decades and genres, from 60s bubblegum to 70s country rock to contemporary indie pop--all while sounding unmistakably like Broken Hearts Are Blue. Singer Ryan Gage's highly literate lyrics are by turns melancholy, hopeful, and hopelessly sad. The double LP set comes in a beautiful gatefold cover and features printed lyrics sleeves and translucent tapestry pink and tussock gold vinyl. (Council Records #30)
