Biography
Cotton Mather is American indie rock band originating from Austin, Texas in the early 1990’s, known for literate lyrics, hook-laden melodies, and song-craft drawing deftly on a broad range of stylistic influences from British Invasion to American Roots. Cotton Mather’s discography of critically acclaimed and largely self-released indie records can be divided into two eras separated by a 13-year hiatus. From 1994-2001, the band released 3 full length records, an EP, and various European singles - most notably 1998’s Kontiki. The album won praise from both Oasis’s Noel Gallagher and Spoon’s Britt Daniel, and bestowed upon Cotton Mather underground cult status. From 2016 to present day they have released 3 more full-length records (as well as an EP with Americana chanteuse Nicole Atkins), adding to what the Austin Chronicle has called songwriter Robert Harrison’s “seemingly endless list of instant classics.” The group has drawn favorable comparisons with Guided By Voices, Apples in Stereo, Elvis Costello, Elliot Smith, and Wilco among others.
