Biography
DFL is an American hardcore band formed in 1991 by Monty Messex and Adam Horovitz (AdRock/Beastie Boys). DFL's lo-fi early 80's hardcore sound has been compared to early Beastie Boys, Minor Threat and Bad Religion. DFL’s first release, My Crazy Life (1992), was released on the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal Records, followed by two releases on Epitaph Records; Proud to Be (1995), produced by AdRock, and Grateful/The Tape Show (1997). During the 90’s DFL toured nationally and internationally with Sick of It All, Sublime, Slayer, Pennywise, 7Seconds, Rancid and many others. However, in 1997, after a non-stop touring and recording schedule, DFL decided to take a hiatus. In 2014, Messex and singer Crazy Tom picked up the hardcore mantel and DFL was back in action! In 2015 Epitaph Records (vinyl) and Burger Records (cassette) co-released a 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Proud to Be,’ and in 2017 Burger Records released a 20th anniversary limited reissue of ‘The Tape Show.’ Since reforming, DFL has hit the road (this spring they headlined Montreal’s Pouzza Fest 8), and they’ve been busy in the recording studio knocking out an EP of DFL’s signature lo-fi early 80’s hardcore bangers with producer Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks, Bad Religion).
