Biography
In the last decade or so, emo music has been irrevocably changed. Whether by the confluence of various disparate ideas via the internet, a new generation inheriting the mantle, or likely, a combination of both, the genre that was once indie rock’s sadder younger sibling has now come to encompass an ever-widening breadth of DIY music. Cleveland, Tennessee’s Guitar Fight From Fooly Cooly is a perfect example of this phenomenon in action. Formed in 2018, the band burst onto the scene with a self-recorded EP, followed by their excellent 2020 LP Soak, which earned them well-deserved acclaim. Combining deft, mathy riffs that call to mind Midwest emo pioneers like Braid, chunky guitars that owe more than a little to post-hardcore, and lyrics that weave between various anime, video game, & pop culture references. On their new EP “Drought”, Guitar Fight From Cooly Cooly further perfects the techniques they were already mastering on Soak. The mathy riffs are more exact, the heavy parts hit harder, and the lyricism is honed. Clocking in at around 11 minutes and boasting just 4 songs, the band also grasps the strength of brevity; The power of saying what you need to say in 2 and a half minutes and keeping it moving. Even for a band of older, more seasoned musicians, the level of finesse and songcraft on display would be impressive. With youth, enthusiasm, and genuine ability on their side, this EP is a step forward on a trajectory that only leads up.
