Biography

mischgewebe is a carefully chosen name for duo Bill Bühler and Melanie Danuser’s amorphous and atmospheric music. Translating to “blended weave”, and recalling the image of complex many-coloured fabrics, the pair, who hail from Eastern Switzerland, bring an eclectic variety of influences to their sound. To listen to mischgewebe is to journey through an experimental soundscape, built from trip-hop basslines, jazzy vocals, and dream pop melodies. Their collaboration began when Danuser was asked to single-handedly compose a theatrical score for a dance performance. As a trained singer, Melanie was awash with ideas, but lacked the equipment required for composition. Running into Bill on the tram 24 hours before the first rehearsal, she remarked that she desperately needed a drum machine. He produced one from his bag. Next, she needed a synth, which also promptly appeared. Finally, she exclaimed, “I think I need you!” and the partnership was born. mischgewebe is at times meditative and soft, enveloping, and drony, at times a soaring and pulsating web of guitar, electronica, and moving vocals. Each element seems at one time to contradict itself, and yet, as a whole, these unexpected combinations work to beautifully test the limits of connectivity, not only between musical styles, but also between Melanie and Bill, and between mischgewebe and their audiences. They also have simple love songs.
