Biography
Spinifex Gum is a collaborative and uniquely Australian project by a collective of Indigenous and non-Indigenous creatives including Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill (The Cat Empire), Deborah Brown (Bangarra Dance Theatre), Lyn Williams AM (Gondwana Choirs) and Marliya – a choir of talented young Indigenous female singers from North Queensland and the Torres Strait – who have come together to create music and art that challenge and inspire contemporary Australia. Celebrated for its unique ability to disarm and uplift audiences, Spinifex Gum is part political and part aspirational, exploring a mix of hard-hitting issues that are pertinent to all Australians of our time, themes of friendship and female empowerment, and acknowledge what can achieved when we come together as one. The standing ovations received each time Spinifex Gum is performed speak for themselves. They tell us that Australia wants and needs to hear more of these stories, but it’s how Spinifex Gum presents them that is different. In Marliya we have a remarkable group of young women and girls who are able to engage audiences in a way that no individual can – simultaneously provoking thought and promoting empathy and understanding.
