Biography

Art Sorority (formerly Art Sorority for Girls) is the songs of Daoud Tyler-Ameen, recorded and performed with a host of collaborators. Beginning as an acoustic solo act in 2002, it has evolved through turns as a harmony duo, a baritone guitar-powered trio, a classic rock quartet and a bedroom production project, built around cinematic songs with mile-a-minute lyrics and dramatic narrative arcs. Tyler-Ameen spent his teens and 20s in New York City’s antifolk scene, whose emphasis on lyric-driven songwriting, scrappy DIY ethics and acoustic aggression left a lasting mark. The band’s full-length debut Slow Dance, released in 2011 after a trio of homebrewed EPs, builds a lush, layered splendor from the contributions of two dozen musicians from that community. That same year, Tyler-Ameen relocated to Washington, D.C., where he quickly immersed himself in the intimacy and intensity of its punk scene. Older Boys — the stripped-down answer to Slow Dance's sparkle and polish, featuring drummer Josh Gottesman — followed in 2014. Since 2015, Tyler-Ameen has also been a member of the D.C. power-pop ensemble Bad Moves.
