Biography

Pleasure Systems is the songwriting moniker of Philadelphia-based musician Clarke Sondermann, known for his collaborative work with artists such as Mega Bog, The Washboard Abs, Body Meat, Likes, and Ben Varian. Sondermann’s solo work explores a wide stylistic variety, fluctuating between devotional folk, ambient soundscapes, and driving synth pop. However, the music remains grounded in Sondermann’s signature intricate guitar work, lush arpeggios, and stark lyricism. The upcoming album, Visiting the Well, is an honest account of grief written and recorded in creative isolation following the death of Sondermann’s partner in June of 2019. The double entendre of the album’s title - the well being not only a figurative well of emotion one visits, but also the world of the un-sick that feels unfamiliar after emerging from the reality of illness - appears in the lyrical content as well. These songs are directed both to an individual and to an absence, the memories bleed into the present and the two distort each other. Visiting the Well is out March 26th, 2021 on Orchid Tapes.
