Biography
Leicester based singer-songwriter James Cherry first caught people’s attention in 2016 with his debut release ‘Why Don’t You Listen’. The track received early support from Taylor Swift, Elton John and BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac and has gone on to achieve over 8 million streams to date. Since then James continued to release music independently, honing his skills as a songwriter and performer whilst balancing a strenuous 9-to-5 in Leicester. In early 2020 he teamed up with London-based indie label Young Poet Records to release ‘Little Luck’, which was featured on Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday’ achieving over 600,000 streams in the process. Forthcoming single ‘Don’t Let Go Of Love’, written and recorded remotely during the UK’s COVID-19 lockdown, sees James stake his claim as one of the most exciting contemporary voices to emerge in recent years. James’ music is epitomised by his deeply soulful vocal delivery, classic songwriting and contemporary production style, reflecting his love of great songwriters such as Prince, rockier alternative sounds such as Jamie T, and the soul-driven pop of Plan B. James’ lyrics are notable for their stark honesty and autobiographical nature, with a focus on personal growth and reflection, his relationships and his experiences growing up as an only child in a single-parent household. This realism lies at the core of James’ creativity giving his music an edge and compulsion that few others can match.
