Biography

ElysianSoul began writing music as a teenager while in the grip of anorexia nervosa. Through her music, she attempts to cast light on the dark intricacies of eating disorders and mental illness. From her very first release, Innermost Nervosa (2013), to her latest release, Unveil (2022), ElysianSoul’s style has morphed from a piano-based recording into an electronic, atmospheric sound, layered with synths, shadows, and mental turmoil. "I'd just finished an English class at school, and noticed a poetry competition advertised on the wall. The theme was 'Promises'. I remember thinking to myself, every single day someone inside my head makes me a promise. If I just shut up, starve myself, hold firm on my willpower, then I will be happy and thin. But at the same time I felt immensely cheated - this voice never came through on its promises, and it was always me who had to suffer. So I went home and vented on paper. Nobody was there for me, I was on waiting list after waiting list to see therapists who didn't have a clue. I wanted my poem to be jarring, to show the raw reality of anorexia. My English teacher refused to submit the poem. He told me it was 'too intense'. But I couldn't let it die there - I had to get this message out into the world. I had to show other people exactly what it was like to live in this cold, dark place."
