Biography

Splaying dissonant chords against pop melodies, Soft and Dumb explore gendered expectations, disembodiment, tenderness, and hardness. The art rock duo met at college in Urbana, Illinois, where they gathered a dedicated following in the eclectic diy house show scene. By spring 2022, they were headlining most of the Urbana shows they played, including closing for waveform*, when the Connecticut-based band stopped through Champaign-Urbana on their way to SXSW 2022. Soft and Dumb have since returned to their hometown Chicago, supporting local acts like Squirrel Flower, CRASHprez, Mike and Nate Kinsella's latest project LIES, and Friko, as well as touring acts like Pretty Sick, Crywank, and former Ought members’ new project Cola. Taking inspiration from Mitski, Soccer Mommy, Protomartyr, and Palm, the duo fuses singer-songwriter heartfeltness with jarring punk angularity. Ferociously diy-minded, Soft and Dumb do all of their own recording, mixing, booking, and bio writing.
