Biography
“Shelter” is the debut original release from Virginia-native rhêtorík. After carving out his spot within the music industry as a touring DJ, and solidifying his hyperactive fanbase with his video series Off The Rhekord, rhêtorík is ready to show the world what he calls his “ultimate long game” - to be an artist. Calling his genre “future alternative rhêtorík pop”, rhêtorík describes his sound as “what happens when you take a kid obsessed with classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, and emo bands like Death Cab and Brand New, and let him become a professional hip-hop and EDM DJ for the better part of a decade.” A self-recorded, self-produced and self-mixed track, “Shelter” embodies the diverse range of musical influences rhêtorík has both grown up on and immersed himself in during his tenure as a DJ. “Shelter” candidly explores the true feelings of mental instability that accompany the lack of a permanent home. His smooth lyrical delivery cleverly jumps between methodical metaphors and unapologetic bluntness, with the verses melting into a hypnotizing melody sitting between groovy hip-hop inspired drums - a combination almost making you forget the weight of the subject at hand. However, the production takes a violent u-turn in the chorus, featuring half-time drums layered under monster future-bass chords, really driving home the stress and emotion in his lyrics.
