Biography
Texas-based duo the Oh Hellos are a lyrical, dramatic indie folk group centered around the talents of siblings Tyler and Maggie Heath. Their evocative, sometimes literary approach to lyrics first appeared on the EP The Oh Hellos in 2011, with their full-length debut, Through the Deep, Dark Valley, arriving a year later. Their second album, 2015's Dear Wormwood, was inspired by the writings of authors C.S. Lewis and Patrick Rothfuss. A series of EPs, each named for one of the Greek gods of the four winds, concluded with Zephyrus in 2020. The group shared a newly recorded acoustic version of their song "Hello My Old Heart" in 2021 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut EP. Raised in a musical family, the Heaths were encouraged to play music together from a young age. Prior to forming the Oh Hellos, Tyler worked as a solo artist, releasing several albums including 2009's We're All in This Together and 2010's Let It Go. Inspired by the results of writing a song together for their mother's birthday, Tyler and Maggie formed the Oh Hellos in 2011. They released an eponymous debut EP and began performing around their hometown of San Marcos, Texas before the end of the year. The group's full-length debut, Through the Deep, Dark Valley, saw release in 2012 and was followed a year later by the holiday EP The Oh Hellos' Family Christmas Album. Although primarily a duo, the Heaths eventually added a large ensemble of backing musicians for tours and live shows. In 2015, the Oh Hellos returned with the album Dear Wormwood. It was inspired by C.S. Lewis' satiric The Screwtape Letters as well as Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle. The first in a series of installment releases, the duo issued Notos in late 2017. It was named for the ancient Greek god of the south wind and inspired by the Heaths' experiences in both the Pacific Northwest and Gulf Coast areas. The seven-song set reached number two on Billboard' Heatseekers Albums chart. Eurus (east) followed in 2018, with Boreas (north) and Zephyrus (west) arriving sequentially in 2020. In December of 2021, the siblings issued an acoustic version of 2011's "Hello My Old Heart" to mark the tenth anniversary of the initial EP. It was included on a limited vinyl reissue in mid-2022. ~ Matt Collar & Marcy Donelson, Rovi
