Biography

Armenian-American singer-songwriter-activist Tamar Kaprelian got her big break after winning OneRepublic's "Apologize" Cover Contest on YouTube in 2008. The cover was released as a single and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder introduced Kaprelian to Interscope Records, who eventually signed her to a recording contract. Born in Scottsdale, AZ, Kaprelian was first excited by the music in classic animated Disney films and by musical theatre. However, as a pianist-vocalist she later drew inspiration from iconic singer-songwriters as Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Carole King. In 2010, Kaprelian released her debut album, Sinner or a Saint, featuring the single "New Day." In 2011, after spending nearly a decade in the business, Tamar found herself wanting more. She moved to New York City; applied and got accepted to Columbia University; and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 2016. During her time in school, she continued to release music and even represented Armenia in the Eurovision Song Competition. In 2016, Tamar also founded Nvak Collective, a 501c3 music education nonprofit empowering and developing female musicians living in underserved communities globally.
