Biography
Born in Cotonou, Benin, singer/ songwriter Shirazee had a nomadic lifestyle, which saw him living in places like Ghana, Paris, South Africa, London and New York, picking up six languages along the way, giving him a unique sense for sounds, which is unmistakably evident throughout his music. He has written for the likes of Ty Dolla $ign, K-pop group Girls’ Generation, Twista, and more before fully committing to his own artistry, which saw him collaborate with Nigerian producer Sarz and South Africa’s Busiswa among others, as well as bringing him together with music legend Sting in a full circle moment, after he previously wrote for him. Growing up in Benin, Shirazee first discovered his love for music through his mother, who played a colorful mix that ranged from the country’s local artists to Motown-era and European classics, while the likes of Busta Rhymes and Outkast became his favorites in high school. This early exposure to different music plays a significant role in his music. His latest EP LOST channels Shirazee’s curious explorer spirit, giving listeners a sonic world tour, fusing unexpected beats from various genres, while also telling a personal story through artful lyricism. Blending Eurodance melodies with modern Afrobeats, to catchy sounds from South Africa’s Kwaito genre and a reworked Afropop version of Sting’s classic Englishman in New York, Shirazee’s Lost EP takes Afropop to new heights, while staying true to his home country and continental roots.
