Biography
Julianna Barwick is an LA-based composer, vocalist and producer who makes deep, reflective compositions rooted in the human voice. After the self-released debut “Sanguine” in 2007, her follow up LP, “The Magic Place”, was issued on Sufjan Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty label in 2011. Next, in 2013, she released "Nepenthe". This record marked Barwick’s first steps into collaborating, working with producer Alex Somers (Jónsi & Alex) and featuring Róbert Sturla Reynisson (from the group múm) and string quartet amiina in Reykjavík. She expanded her parameters further on “Will”, her 2016 album, enlisting more collaborators in Mas Ysa's Thomas Arsenault, Dutch cellist Maarten Vos, and Chairlift percussionist Jamie Ingalls. She has played shows with Explosions In The Sky, Angel Olsen, The Flaming Lips, Philip Glass, Yoko Ono and Perfume Genius among others. She has had collaborations with the dance company ballet collective, Ecstatic Music Festival (among others), and also released an EP with Rafael Anton Irisarri on the super-limited Thesis label, and “Circumstace Synthesis” EP, on RVNG Intl. sub-label Commend There, in which she employed AI to build a score that responded to the airborne environment in the downtown sky from New York’s Sister City Hotel.
