Biography
Lupen Crook is a singer-songwriter and visual artist from Kent, UK. Initially making his name as an anti-folk singer-songwriter, Lupen Crook has gone on to create an eclectic music style. His visceral live performances and independent releases have seen him described, variously, as "Too weird for the folk fans, too folk for the urchins ... the lone wolf at the back of the pack" (NME), "a solo singer/songwriter of a particularly unique ilk" (Drowned In Sound), and "Kent’s finest neo-gothic psychedelic folk troubadour" (Subba Cultcha). Originally from The Medway Towns, Lupen Crook has drawn comparisons to artists as diverse as Kevin Coyne, Ray Davies, Jacques Brel and Syd Barrett. Working solo and with a variety of musicians, particularly between 2007 and 2010, where various releases and full band shows were credited to 'Lupen Crook and The Murderbirds', featuring drummer Bob Langridge and multi-instrumentalist Tom Langridge, alongside violinist Craig Harff, guitarist Chris Austin and bassist Clayton Boothroyd. As a visual artist, Crook works primarily in oil on canvas. In 2022 his work was exhibited at London's Saatchi Gallery. He has produced music videos, animations, self-published books and zines, whilst often presenting musical releases with bespoke handmade packaging. Other musical projects include SEX CELLS, Lost Film Foundation, and Holy Robots Photo credit (1) Phil Dillon (2) Stuart Hardy (3) Jenny Hardcore (4) Roger Sergeant (5) Sara Norling
